The English Language Unit (ELU) organizes a one-day conference on the teaching of English for Specific Purposes which is held at the University premises every other September.

The conference is an innovative attempt in the field of ESP/EAP in tertiary education and attracts participants from both the public and private sectors .

During the conference there is an ESP book exhibition which is open throughout the day.

Report of the 1994 ESP conference

The 1994 conference was organized by Clio Rizouli in collaboration with TESOL-MACEDONIA THRACE.The conference was officially opened by the Vice Rector of the University of Macedonia, Professor Lefteris Skalidis, and it continued with ten professional speeches and three commercial ones. The plenary speaker, invited by the British Council of Thessaloniki , was Ms Terry Tomscha, ELT writer, who gave a lecture on "Learner Responsibility on ESP".

The speakers listed in the order they gave their professional presentations were:

Ms Vicky Megas, ESP teacher & school owner, spoke about "Motivating ESP Learners".
Ms Camilla Ralls, deputy centre director, British Council, Thessaloniki, presented a paper on "The ESP Teacher & the Textbook".
Dr. Mersini Karagevrekis, ESP instructor, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, gave a talk on "Teaching Vocabulary in ESP classes".
Ms. Iphigenia Mahili, teacher & ESP coordinator, presented a paper on "Project Work in ESP".
Mr. Jim Arnold, trainer and co-director, Study Space, Thessaloniki, spoke about "EAP-A ‘Must’ for Students Studying Abroad".
Ms. Alison Little, ESP teacher, British Council, Athens, presented a paper on "A Professional Learning Experience".
Dr. Areti-Maria Sougaris, University of Essex, gave a talk on "Responding to Authentic ESP Texts".
Ms Jenny Stefanou, ESP instructor, University of Macedonia, presented a paper on "Effective ESP Reading : A Case Study".

Report of the 1996 ESP Conference

The theme of the 1996 Conference was "ESP in the Academic and Business Context Today" and it was organised by Jenny Stefanou-Dimatati. The conference was officially opened by the Vice Rector of the University of Macedonia, Professor Lefteris Skalidis, and it continued with thirteen speeches.

The plenary speaker was Ms Jill Northcott, ESP Teaching Fellow and Teacher Trainer at the Institute for Applied Language Studies in Edinburgh University, UK. In her keynote speech, entitled "ESP Teaching for the 1990s", Ms Northcott highlighted the consideration which is given to role perceptions of practising ESP teachers by drawing cross-cultural comparisons and gave an account of case studies of some very diverse ESP teaching situations.

The 1996 conference was co-sponsored by two Foreign Language Schools-Synchrono Multimedia Educational Programs and Foreign Languages AXON, Thessaloniki.

Ms Stavroula Kartali, Assistant Professor of English at the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, spoke about "Needs Analysis, Syllabus Design and Material Production for Railway Staff".
Dr. Maria Valiouli, School of Journalism and Mass Media of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, spoke on "Journalism, EFL and Linguistics: A Happy Combination".
Mr. Luke Prodromou, teacher trainer and EFL author, British Council, presented a paper on "Taking Failure by the Throat".
Mr. Michael Wells, Kalogrea English Language Centre, Thessaloniki, held a workshop on "Cross Cultural Awareness in the Business Language Classroom".
Ms Vicky Megas, co-director of the New Centre for English Language Studies, Athens, held a workshop on "Lesson Planning for Professionals: A Different Ballgame".
Dr. Mersini Karagevrekis, ESP Instructor, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, presented a paper on "Using Hypercontext in Economics".
Ms Iphigenia Mahili, Anatolia College, Thessaloniki, talked about "Removing the Blindfold: Portfolios and Research in Business Writing".
Dr. Teresa Feeney-Lyssimachou, foreign language school owner, held a workshop on "NLP: Are You Communicating?"
Ms Julia Tanner-Bogia, Teacher, Trainer and EFL writer and Ms Kathryn Lucey-Koutsokostas, Teacher, writer and EFL author held a workshop on "The Art of Presenting".
Ms Eugenia Papaioannou, EFL teacher and educational cosultant talked about "The Teaching Possibility Frontier in Economics".
Ms Zoe Kantaridou-Kassimidou and Ms Jenny Stefanou-Dimatati, ESP instructors, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, presented a paper on "How to Get Students Involved in a University Classroom".
Ms Natasa Chondrakis, ESP teacher, Synchrono Foreign Language Institute, Pireas, spoke about "Reaching New Horizons in Multimedia Teaching Programs".
Ms Niki Gakoudi, ESP teacher, gave a talk on "Vocabulary and the Use of Dictionaries".

Forthcoming event

The 3rd ESP conference will be held on 25 September 1998. The theme this
year will be "Compelling Learning Techniques in ESP" and the plenary speaker, sponsored by the British Council, Thessaloniki, will be Dr Anthony Baldry from the University of Pavia, Italy.

The closing date for submission of papers will be 10 May 1998
